Gatsby- Nick's POV Journal Entry

I feel as if Gatsby only used me to get to Daisy. It was clear to me that as soon as things were going well between them at their meeting at our houses, he forgot all about my presence. I also think that Tom is a total scumbag. He punched his mistress when she said Daisy's name. I understand that he might've been angry, but he did not have to punch her. I realize that my suspicions about Gatsby might've been right. He had Jordan tell me about the meeting so that he wouldn't have to do it. If he had done it, his intentions would've been perfectly clear. He knew that I would've been able to see that he was only using me. As soon as she mentioned it, that realization popped into my head.

Propaganda and fallacies

Propaganda mad fallacies deliberately spread information to help their cause. They want you to think a certain way about things, a way that they decide on. Companies or groups that use propaganda and fallacies only present information that will help convince you to support something, and hold back on the information that will turn you against it.

Transfer- Olympic athletes used as symbol of overcoming certain setbacks

Plain Folks- Talking about us as Americans.
Observational Selection- Showing happy people smiling near the ocean.

Glittering Generalities- saying things like "even better" and "come back" "an even better year."
Bandwagon- Saying that everyone is going toward the Gulf and that it's "the place to be."

"Where Have You Gone Charming Billy?"

In "Where Have You Gone Charming Billy?" The setting is in a war. Probably Vietnam because of the description of rice paddys. The mood is very solemn and serene. Everything is very quiet. PFC Paul Berlin is wishing that he could be out of this. The situation he pictures in his mind is the total opposite of war. Knowing that Berlin is worn out by this war, the reader feels sympathetic towards him. The reader feels that it is unfortunate that he has to go through these horrible situations.

1. Country corn flakes
Ethos- they display the logo for General Mills multiple times. This gives it credibility.
Observational selection- it only says that they taste good. It does not display any health facts. They are only choosing to show the good side.

2. Alka-Seltzer
Logos- they said it was the best that you could ever get, so obviously you would want to use it.
Half truths- The only say that it is the best thing you could take out of anything ever. They do not include that it may not be such a miracle-worker for some people. They insinuate that is will cure everyone because it is the best.

3. Delk
Ethos- they keep zooming in on the logo. It gives in credibility.
Logos- the man keeps saying that things take JUST six minutes or cost JUST six dollars. They are trying to get you to think its not that much so you would think it's logical to buy this product.

Chain Gang

This song is about people being stuck where they are. Uniformity has basically taken over their lives. They could work really hard but they will still be right where they are. The singer uses chain gangs to get this message across because chain gangs were people grouped together by a chain. The all were equal and had to move together. They couldn't get anywhere if they couldn't move together. So he is saying that at the time society was like a chain gang. He was almost encouraging them to break away from the chain gang.

"Soma"

        In "Soma" by The Strokes, the author, or singer in this case, is singing about how conforming to the rest of society is not always easy. He writes from the perspective of someone who is on the outside looking in. He writes, "And I am stop, and go in your eyes." Stop is representing him and go is representing society. They are opposites. He explains his struggle again by writing, "And I am stop, oh darling, let me go." He knows what society wants him to be. But since he also knows that he can't be that, he wants society to stop trying to change him.

"Loss of Innocence"
Innocence can be the lack of knowledge or lack of experiece of bad things.
You can lose something that isn't tangeable through thoughts, emotions, or actions.

2. There are darker colors in the foreground and right sides. Normally innocence is portrayed with lighter, purer colors.

"Shame"
       The subject of the Avett Brothers' song "Shame" is the shame that the narrator feels for losing the one he loves. The tone of this piece is very regretful. In the lyrics he writes things like, "Day after day, more of the same", "That's filled with guilt and overwhelming", and, "I'd like to see those things undo." These words all have a sort of negative connotation, which shows that the narrator is feeling regretful.

1. The purpose of this film was to demonstrate that deaf people aren't any different thatn regular people, and they should be treated just the same.

2. I think it was effective because the audience didn't know that the girl was deaf until the very end. She was treated normally, so they think that she is just a normal person.

3. At the end, I felt happy when the guy didn't think differently of her just because she was deaf.

S- The piece looks like it has to deal with those in poverty. The colors that represent poverty are all dark and gloomy. But the flowers are all brightly colored, along with the blanket that is wrapped around the infant. These brighter colors may represent the idea that there are good things in the world that can stand out.
N- The narrator/artist may recognize the darkness of poverty, but he may also be able to recognize that there are some good things in life, such as flowers and children.
A- This piece may be meant for people who can relate to the hardships of poverty and understand the good things in life.
P- The artist might want us to think on a deeper level about how things are not always what they may seem. Yes, the family may have a hard life, but they might also have things that they are grateful for.

Analytical Claim:
The police officer and diner employee aren't taking the boy seriously. They think it is all innocent.

The Pearl- 2

Juana seems to be the only one who believes that the pearl is evil. And that forshadows that it will bring misfortunes later on. Juana seems like a very wise woman, so if anyone would notice the evil in the pearl, it would be her. And she is right. Someone breaks into their house to try to steal the pearl. That is when the audience really believes that the pearl is evil and will cause more harm later on in the story.

I thought that all the misfortunes caused by the pearl were to be expected. The forshadowing in this story made it very easy to predict that there would be more bad things that would happen to Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. The author's plotline seemed pretty basic to me.
